    Wemeldinge is een echt Zeeuws kunstenaarsdorp, met een actieve kern van beeldende kunstenaars, aquarellisten en keramisten. Het dorp is prachtig gelegen aan de Oosterschelde en heeft een van de mooiste met leilinden omzoomde dorpsstraten van Zeeland.

    Stichting Kunstdorp Wemeldinge is opgericht naar aanleiding van een onderzoek, dat in 2008 is uitgevoerd, naar onder andere de relatie tussen kunst en toerisme in Zeeland. Door het succes van de Kunst- & Natuurroute, die jaarlijks in Wemeldinge wordt georganiseerd, werd Wemeldinge in dit onderzoek als kunstdorp genoemd naast de reeds bestaande kunstdorpen Kats, Domburg, Graauw en Groede.

    Voor de organisatoren van de Kunst- en Natuurroute en de kunstenaars in Wemeldinge was dit de aanleiding om te kijken wat de oprichting van de nieuwe Stichting Kunstdorp Wemeldinge zou kunnen betekenen voor de kunstenaars, voor Wemeldinge en haar inwoners.

    Stichting Kunstdorp Wemeldinge is op 16 maart 2009 opgericht door Peter Koelemij, Gerty van Hout-Habing en Jaco Jan Bras. Er is gekozen voor de oprichting van een aparte stichting, vanwege het verschil in begroting en doelstellingen van de beide stichtingen.
    Kunstdorp Wemeldinge richt zich gedurende het hele jaar op kunst en toerisme voor Wemeldinge. De Kunst- en Natuurkring Wemeldinge organiseert elk jaar gedurende twee weekeinden in juni en augustus de zeer succesvolle Kunst- en Natuurroute. Beide stichtingen werken nauw samen en een fusie is op termijn zeker niet uitgesloten.

    Stichting Kunstdorp Wemeldinge heeft vier doelstellingen, te weten,

    • openstellen van ateliers van kunstenaars in Wemeldinge;
    • het plaatsen van kunst in de openbare ruimte;
    • het organiseren van een jaarlijks kunstevenement.
    • het streven naar de openstelling van een ruimte, waar het Natuurpark Oosterschelde te bezichtigen is;

    Het eerste wapenfeit van Kunstdorp Wemeldinge is inmiddels zichtbaar. Het beeld van de Zeemeermin van kunstenaar Leon Vermunt is op 5 juni 2009 onthuld door gedeputeerde H. van Waveren. De zeemeermin staat op een paal, vlakbij het monumentale peilhuisje, in de buitenhaven van Wemeldinge.
